Collecting South African Coins

Coin collecting is a very interesting and pleasant hobby. Furthermore, South Africa’s long history of collectible coins is the icing on the cake. There are many different collectable coins and this web page presents information about the most important coins in one place.

The story of South African coins started with the introduction of the famous Krugerrand in 1967. The idea of this gold coin was to help marketing South Africa’s gold coins. The Krugerrand was very successful and dominated the gold coin in 1980.

Since Krugerrand was so successful, the next gold coin series was introduced in 1986. King Protea is portrayed on one side of Protea Series while the design on the other side changes every year.

The South African Mint started the Natura Series in 1984 with different designs each year. These series are South Africa’s first fine gold coins with 24 carat gold.

Nelson Mandela was elected in 1994 as South Africa’s president and several different Mandela Coins were released since then. To honour Mandela’s 90th birthday a special coin was released in July 18, 2008. This coin is also known as “Madiba R5”.
